It is estimated that fifteen million Americans own a can of pepper spray for self defense. Fortunately, most of those cans will never have to be sprayed. Unfortunately, however, most of the owners of pepper spray have never had any pepper spray training.
For any self defense weapon to be useful, you must be trained in using that weapon. The time to learn how to remove the safety cap and spray your pepper spray is not when you are being attacked. If the nozzle is pointed in the wrong direction, you will spray yourself. Pepper spray training will prepare you in case the worst ever happens.
Some of the manufacturers of pepper spray offer a container of similar shape and size of the pepper spray that has been filled with water for training purposes. If you cannot find this training aid, it is suggested that you purchase two of the pepper spray containers, one for training and one for actual use.
One suggested method of training is to go outside and tape a piece of paper at about head height to a tree. Use the water can or the extra can of pepper spray to practice opening the container and spraying the paper attacker. Initially you are not trying for speed, but for accuracy.
The container needs to be held firmly between your palm and fingers. Use the thumb to flip open the cap. Then use the thumb or trigger finger to operate the button that sprays the contents at the paper target. Continue practicing until you can accurately shoot the spray at the target.
Each time you spray, take a step back and to the side. Do not walk toward the target. The spray will get into your eyes. The step back and aside moves you out of the way of your attacker. - 31373
